Tiny Power was founded by Charles Arnold of Junction City, Oregon, who started the Tiny Power business sometime in the 1940s. He was a perfectionist in anything he did and one of his models was exhibited in the Smithsonian Museum for several years.
I visited Mr. Arnold in 1963, and was very impressed with his model "M" engine and all the other Tiny Power products. Mr. Arnold died in 1975 and I purchased the Tiny Power business from his son in 1977. When the price of fuel went up in the early 70s, I remembered the "M" and thought it could be modified to to drive a generator to produce electricity for those who wanted to burn wood, or other cheap fuel in a remote location... "Colonial Iron Works specialises in the design and manufacture of machinery, including Steam Engines, Boilers, and associated feed pumps and ancillary equipment etc.

The Engine Shown here, is a Twin Cylinder (single expansion) that was recently built and installed in a Steam Launch named "Norita". It produces approximately 12bhp, and turns the propeller shaft to a maximum of 200rpm. This combination powers the 30ft Launch along at 6 to 7 knots. (Vessel Hull Speed)

The construction of the Engine consists of Cast Iron, Bronze, SG Iron castings, and Bright Steel work. The piping relating to the engine and boiler installation are both steel and copper, with insulation lagging where required. The engine is embellished with brass name plates, brass bands, and polished Mahogany T&G panelling.

Fitted with Stevenson Expansion Link valve gear, it also has the following features; Slide Valves, Lubricator Fed Trunk type Crossheads, Balanced Crank Shaft, Four Main Bearings, Cylinder and Valve Chest Drains, Feed and Air Pumps are Crosshead Driven and Grease Cups on the Main Bearings, Eccentric Straps, Wheyshaft Bearings, and Rockerbeam Bearing."

The on-site Cotswold Heritage Light Railway allows the testing of some of our comissions and is on occasion open to the public.

Tom Jensen's genius for designing and making steam engines was evident at an early age. In 1911 at the age of 10, he fashioned his first engine using steel cans, after becoming enamored with the horse drawn steam threshers that visited the family farm in his native Denmark. Twelve years later, while completing schooling for his Mechanical Engineering Degree, Tom built a 175 pound monster steam engine, complete with a hand made generator, which today, we know as "Old Number 1". This engine was so well designed and executed that it won a Silver Medal at the 1923 Denmark State Fair. Today, almost 80 years later "Old # 1" still runs like new. (This extraordinary engine can be seen up above on this page.) Tom did not know at the time that this engine would prove to be the seed from which, nine years later, in Jeannette Pennsylvania, the Jensen Steam Engines of today would grow.

Powering your steam launch
Steam boaters typically choose the Pearl Single Cylinder Engine with its conservative 2 horsepower when powering their 15 to 20 foot launch. Those powering up to a 25 foot launch typically choose the Pearl Twin Cylinder Engine with its conservative 4 horsepower.
