The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) is an association of United States and Canadian trade professionals dedicated to promoting the long term stability and integrity of the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries. The Association pursues its goals through the combined use of educational programs, publicity, industry events, government and industry relations, and printed materials for both the trade and consumer. The AGTA is well-known in the gemstone and jewelry industries for maintaining the highest ethical standards.
The AGTA's objectives are:

• To represent and further the interests of the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries in the United States and Canada.
• To promote, maintain, and perpetuate the highest ethical standards among the Members of the AGTA and within the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries.
• To protect the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries, related industries, and ultimately the consumer from fraud, abuse, misrepresentation, and deceptive advertising related to natural colored gemstones
• To create a greater awareness and knowledge of colored gemstones and Cultured Pearls and act as a source of information for the jewelry trade to disseminate to the consumer.
• To educate these industries, related industries, and the consumer about natural colored gemstones and Cultured Pearls
• To assist the consumer in identifying dealers of integrity in the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries.
• To assist the natural colored gemstone and Cultured Pearl industries in identifying dealers of integrity in the wholesale colored gemstone marketplace.
• To establish closer communication and information sharing between the AGTA and all segments of the jewelry trade and related industries.

"Educational Programs of the GC
Three stages of educational programs are currently active for the training of experts in precious materials and jewelry: high education, secondary high education, courses for better qualification. Each stage can be resulted in training abroad in world's gemological and trade centers.
High education
In 1996 the Gemology Major was established in the Geological Department of the Moscow State University. Students were accepted according to general application. At the end of the second year students were transferred to the gemological specialization where they continued study at the agreement with the Roskomdragmet program. "The Gemmological Association of Great Britain can trace its origins back to 1908. The world’s first qualifying Gemmology course originated in London and the first Gemmology diploma was awarded in 1913.
The first Gemmology Correspondence Course followed in 1921. The Association became an independent organization in 1931 and combined with the Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain in 1990 to form ‘GAGTL’ . These initials were replaced by the ‘Gem-A’ logo in 2001. The Gem-A headquarters is situated close to Hatton Garden in central London and contains the Education office, Gem Tutorial Centre, Membership office, Gem Testing Laboratory and Gem-A Instruments."

is a non-profit career training facility with headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA and has been operating since 1983 serving the jewellery trade and the general public. It is presently offering class-room instruction in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. .

is the largest career training institution for gemmologists and gem technologists in Canada. "The ISG was originally an Allied Gem Tutorial Center for the Gemmological Association of Great Britain before going independent in 2004.
The ISG holds memberships in the AGTA, Jewelers Vigilance Committee, Texas Jewelers Association, Polygon, and other professional industry associations such as the Better Business Bureau.
The ISG currently has over 1100 students representing 50 nations world-wide.
The ISG is a certified education provider for many US State Departments of Insurance to train insurance agents and adjusters in gemology.

" A society is about people; gems are the subjects that bring us together. The IGS has thousands of members on every continent, (except Antarctica of course.) They range from seasoned professionals to the merely curious.
Professionals join because gems are their favorite topic. We offer them the Professional Gem Reference, the Gem Pricing Guide, news, and advertising privileges. However, from the feedback we receive their favorite part are the technical articles. They tell us the articles are a good refresher and we frequently hear where they have learned something new. The professionals in our organization are important for sharing their wealth of knowledge. No one individual has the experience of the membership as a whole.
On the other hand, some of our members have no interest in working in the trade. They simply want to unravel the mysteries surrounding their prizes. Nowhere else can a person access so much information from an unbiased source. ..." more

"Are you interested in learning about the science of gemology? Below are lessons that I've developed as part of a course that I teach at Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN), where I'm an Emeritus Professor. But you don't need to be a registered student to use these materials!
As you go through the lectures and essays, you'll see references to text readings, homework assignments, self quizzes, discussions and exams which are meant for the registered students only. The down side is that you won't be able to access the actual course website and the materials posted there, unless you are a registered student. The up side is that you're welcome to freely browse the contents located here, and there are no tests or grades or time schedules to worry about. I've posted a sample course syllabus for your information, but none of the rules, timelines, or expections listed therein apply to you, the casual visitor."
