Image NYISE: Dr. Abraham Nemeth, noted inventor of the math braille code used world-wide, came to NYISE for an extended visit with our students. "The New York Institute for Special Education(NYISE) is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility which provides quality programs for children who are blind or visually disabled, emotionally and learning disabled and preschoolers who are developmentally delayed.

The school was founded in 1831 as The New York Institution for the Blind as one of the first schools in the United States to provide an educational program for children who were blind or visually impaired. Early in the twentieth century, the name was changed to The New York Institute for the Education of the Blind to emphasize the educational character of the school. A pictorial history of the school and a major collection of disability links called the Blindness Resource Center are available at the site.

Today, the Schermerhorn Program continues its rich tradition of educating children who are blind or visually impaired. The NYISE have also used this expertise to develop new programs to help children with other disabilities.

In the 1980's educators recognized the need to provide programs designed specifically for students with learning and emotional disabilities. In response to this need, the school established the Van Cleve Program for those children who could not be served in a traditional school setting. In 1986, the school's name was changed to The New York Institute for Special Education to better reflect this expanded focus and commitment to children with a variety of disabilities. In 1987, a program for developmentally delayed preschoolers was established called the Readiness Program.

Nearly 300 students from ages 3 to 21 now attend NYISE. The school offers the options of a day program or a five day residential program. All students return home on weekends and holidays. An Individualized Education Program is developed for each student. In addition, a full array of services is provided, which include counseling, career guidance, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language therapy, individual and team sports and adaptive recreational activities." ... more

GRTR!
"Get Ready to Read! (GRTR!) is a national initiative to build the early literacy skills of preschool-age children. The initiative provides an easy-to-administer, research-based screening tool to early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents in order to help them prepare all children to learn to read and write.

GRTR!'s program vision is that all preschool children will have the skills they need to learn to read when they enter school. The Web site is a part of NCLD's initiative to provide parents, educators, health-care professional and advocated with information to help build early literacy skills by integrating emergent literacy screening and learning activities into routine early childhood education, child-care and parenting practices.

Why is Get Ready to Read! so important?
Research shows that learning to read and write begins very early in a child’s development—years before kindergarten—and is a result of adult interaction and guidance.

Children who enter kindergarten with strong pre-reading skills are more likely to become strong readers, thereby laying the foundation for future learning. Those who lack these skills are likely to fall behind, creating a gap that only widens over time. Children who fail to develop these essential skills often have difficulties in other areas when learning becomes more heavily dependent on the ability to decipher words and comprehend text." ... more

"In March of 1963, parents of children with learning disabilities representing local support groups from around the country gathered in Chicago for a national conference. These concerned families organized into a national organization which was incorporated in 1964 as the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD). From those beginnings, the Learning Disabilities Association of America has grown to serve tens of thousands of members with learning disabilities, their families and the professionals who work with them. With the support of parent activists and national experts, the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 2000 with the exclusive mission of representing the needs and interests of children with apraxia of speech. Those programs known as Apraxia-KIDS were now operated under the auspices of CASANA. A generous operating partner, The Hendrix Foundation, helped to solidify CASANA's programs for nearly five years, helping to assure a strong future for the organization. The foundation underwriting and partnership produced many exciting and very needed programs.

As recently as the mid 1990s, little educational information was available for families whose children were diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). While seeking information following the diagnosis of her son, Sharon Gretz became frustrated with the void of educational material on the subject of childhood speech apraxia. In 1997, she established the first parent support group in the US (located in Pittsburgh, PA) and began working with local experts to conduct educational training programs for speech-language pathologists.

Also in 1997, Ms. Gretz started the first apraxia email discussion group known as Apraxia-KIDS. A companion website evolved that was developed, overseen and managed by her and other volunteer parents. She recruited leading experts in the field of Childhood Apraxia of Speech to advise content for the website. The Apraxia-KIDS website became known for its comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date information. However, the public need for information, education, and resources was unable to be managed solely by volunteers or without formal structure and funding.

"With this in mind, we know that to serve our students well, we must be on the cutting edge of the best practices in education. Not only do our students enjoy small classes, a very low teacher to student ratio and individualized instruction, but they also benefit from multi-sensory teaching, innovative assistive technology, research-based programs for students with learning differences, and a dedicated faculty consisting of both content-area practitioners and learning specialists who truly understand how to educate students with unique learning needs. At the same time, Woodlynde School exemplifies the best aspects of a traditional independent school."

What is a learning disability?
"Some individuals, despite having an average or above average level of intelligence, have real difficulty acquiring basic academic skills. These skills include those needed for successful reading, writing, listening, speaking and/or math. These difficulties might be the result of a learning disability."

"The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law, defines a learning disability as a condition when a child's achievement is substantially below what one might expect for that child. Learning disabilities do not include problems that are primarily the result of intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, or visual, hearing, emotional or intellectual disabilities."

"Many children with LD have struggle with reading. The difficulties often begin with individual sounds, or phonemes. Students may have problems with rhyming, and pulling words apart into their individual sounds (segmenting) and putting individual sounds together to form words (blending). This makes it difficult to decode words accurately, which can lead to trouble with fluency and comprehension. As students move through the grades, more and more of the information they need to learn is presented in written (through textbooks) or oral (through lecture) form. This exacerbates the difficulties they have succeeding in school."

"Learning disabilities affect about 15 percent of the population, and can have a profound impact on individuals and families. People with learning disabilities are just as smart (and sometimes smarter) than their peers, but have difficulty learning in conventional school settings. Understand more about learning disabilities, discover how to overcome obstacles, and learn how to uncover hidden aptitudes and gifts." ...

Spark the Learning Revolution
Imagine schools where all students learn.
"Think about it. If we could wave a magic wand and instantly transform education and improve our schools, what would we want the outcome to look like?"

"All students learn. Isn’t it as straightforward as that? An idea that has two simple parts. “All students” – not just some, but all. And “learn” – not just getting a passing score on a test, but acquiring or gaining something of value, something that makes you better, something that becomes an asset as you move through life. Something that helps you realize your promise and be successful – as an individual, and as a member of our society."

Welcome to the Learning Revolution.
"It’s time to remind ourselves that what we want for education is this simple: All students learn. We’re not saying that the problems in education today are simple to fix – they aren’t – or that there is, in fact, some magic wand we can wave – there isn’t. But unless we think about learning and teaching differently, unless we change the conversations about education reform to focus on learning – truly helping all students learn and thrive – our efforts to make things better will miss the mark." ... more
