" Jackson & Perkins was founded in 1872, when Charles Perkins, with the financial backing of his father-in-law, A.E. Jackson, started up a modest enterprise wholesaling strawberries and grape plants from a farm in Newark, N.Y. He also sold directly to local customers who stopped by the farm. In those early days, when you bought a garden plant from Jackson & Perkins, chances were you would make your purchase directly from Charlie Perkins himself. He would always say, "If it doesn't grow for you, let me know." When they did, he would provide either a replacement or a refund. To this day, every Jackson & Perkins plant is guaranteed to grow.
Jackson & Perkins began selling roses before the turn of the century, but it was some time before they became the company's main product. That happened almost by chance, the result of an employee's interest in rose breeding. In 1896 the company hired E. Alvin Miller, who, in addition to his regular duties, tried his hand at hybridizing roses. In 1901, Jackson & Perkins marketed one of Miller's varieties, a climber called Dorothy Perkins, which became one of the most widely planted roses in the world." more

Star Roses | | | On the third of June 1897, a small Pennsylvanian nursery incorporated as The Conard and Jones Company, a mail-order firm specializing in roses, plants and seeds. As soon as they began, their destiny changed. In 1899, a young Robert Pyle was hired as a helper. The company had no idea just how helpful Pyle would be. Robert quickly proved to be management material with a head for business and a heartfelt desire to please customers. Robert also had a love for roses. In fact, his love for roses and ambition to share them with the rest of the world emboldened him to make an unprecedented business promise - he guaranteed his rose plants would grow and bloom. The skeptics chided him but the East's gardeners applauded. And Robert Pyle developed his vision. "... more

Edmunds Roses | | | " Edmunds' Roses is a second generation family company started by Fred Edmunds, Jr. in 1949. His father, Fred Edmunds, Sr. was the curator of the Washington Park Rose Test Gardens in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from Cornell University and serving two years in the Army, Fred, Jr. leased 40 acres in Wilsonville and started growing roses. He moved the nursery to its present location in 1961. Over the years he developed a relationship with many of the world's rose hybridizing families and started introducing new roses to the U.S. market through his color catalog. Fred Edmunds, Jr. and his wife and partner in the business, Wini, retired in January of 1992 and sold the company to their son, Phil who had been in the business for 14 years, and Phils' wife, Kathy. Phil handles the production while Kathy manages the office. Fred and Wini are still very active in the business, helping out where needed and keeping in contact with rose lovers around the world.
